Sergio Alvarez is from El Monte, CA in the Los Angeles County. As a So Cal native he attended the University of California, Santa Barbara and majored in Cell and Developmental Biology receiving distinction in the major and graduating with honors. His interest in medicine began at a young age alongside some of his earliest memories and continues to grow today. His passion was further solidified in high school and college while volunteering at a neurology clinic and various emergency rooms. With the help of his uncle they recruited notable teachers, graduate students, and city council members who all shared a common background in collegiate wrestling. They taught high-risk inner-city students the fundamentals of the sport and how qualities like hard work, discipline, and determination can be used in their academic lives. As a first year medical student at UCLA, Sergio is part of the student-run homeless clinic, Emergency Medicine Interest Group, and incoming LMSA medical student representative. Raised in an underserved community, he hopes to address issues affecting neighborhoods like his own. In his spare time he enjoys playing Call of Duty, watching MMA, and his pit bull terrier.
